SOPA Protests Were Scary for Politicians Who Back Them!

I received this email from FightForTheFuture.org and figured I share it as a good way to end the blackout on my blog. Not that I post to it everyday anyhow, but it's just the principle.

"Today was nuts, right?

Google launched a petition. Wikipedia voted to shut itself off. Senators' websites went down just from the sheer surge of voters trying to write them. NYC and SF geeks had protests that packed city blocks.

You made history today: nothing like this has ever happened before. Tech companies and users teamed up. Tens of millions of people who make the internet what it is joined together to defend their freedoms. The free network defended itself. Whatever you call it, the bottom line is clear: from today forward, it will be much harder to mess up the internet.

The really crazy part? We might even win.

Approaching Monday's crucial Senate vote there are now 35 Senators publicly opposing PIPA. Last week there were 5. And it just takes just 41 solid "no" votes to permanently stall PIPA (and SOPA) in the Senate. What seemed like miles away a few weeks ago is now within reach.

But don't trust predictions. The forces behind SOPA & PIPA (mostly movie companies) can make small changes to these bills until they know they have the votes to pass. Members of Congress know SOPA & PIPA are unpopular, but they don't understand why--so they're easily duped by superficial changes. The Senate returns next week, and the next few days are critical. Here are two things to think about:

1. Plan on calling your Senator every day next week. Pick up the phone each morning and call your Senators' offices, until they vote "no" on cloture. If your site participated today, consider running a "Call the Senate" link all next week.

2. Tomorrow, drop in at your Senators' district offices. We don't have a cool map widget to show you the offices nearest you (we're too exhausted! any takers?). So do it the old fashioned way: use Google, or the phonebook to find the address, and just walk in, say you oppose PIPA, and urge the Senator to vote "no" on cloture. These drop-in visits make our spectacular online protests more tangible and credible.

This past weekend marked the 5th Annual Star Wars convention known as Star Wars Celebration V and it also marked "The Last Tour to Endor" as Disney Hollywood Studios is shutting down the attraction for a much needed renovation and upgrade!

HollywoodNews.com reports about the current Tour to Endor attraction:

It’s an adequate diversion, and it’s air-conditioned. But it’s also inexcusably outdated. My six-year-old son doesn’t care, of course. He sees C3PO, R2D2 and a few lightsabers, so his day is made. But a close friend who’d also recently vacationed at Disney couldn’t stop ripping on “Star Tours,” and Lucas, for ignoring the ride for so many years. There are no references to Lucas’s three prequel films, all of which came out after “Star Tours” opened. The videos shown to patrons as they wait haven’t changed in decades. In general, the ride isn’t a fair representation of the “Star Wars” world.

At least, it wasn’t. Until now.

“Star Tours” in Orlando is shutting down for renovations, but not before “Star Wars” fans send it off with a stellar party. “Last Tour to Endor” will be held on Saturday, Aug. 14, at Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World.

Starwars.com announced last month in their special invitation to be "First Among the Last".

With a heaping helping of Disney magic, the Star Wars galaxy will descend upon Walt Disney World Resort from 8pm - 1am on Aug. 14, 2010 for an exclusive party to let fans of the sci-fi saga provide a special send-off to Star Tours before the popular attraction "powers down" in preparation for a new, 3-D Star Wars adventure that will open in 2011 at Disneyland park in California and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.

But before the blaster doors on the attraction close temporarily, Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park will host "Last Tour to Endor," an after-hours, private event that will feature live entertainment, Disney characters in their favorite Star Wars attire, a special Star Wars-themed fireworks spectacular, the "Death Star Disco," Jedi Training Academy, Star Wars trivia challenges and more.

And yes, Darth Vader may even moonwalk.

Tips on Decorating Your Home for Halloween

Halloween is a fun holiday accompanied by imaginative decorations, more sweets than anyone should consume habitually, and good times for all ages. Holding your own Halloween party can be a lot of fun, providing you put some thought into the planning. Here are some tips on things to consider when preparing and decorating your home for Halloween.

First of all, when hosting a Halloween party in your home, it is important to consider age appropriate decorations during the planning stages. While blood, monsters and tombstones may be appropriate for teenagers and adults, this type of decoration can leave smaller children with nightmares for several weeks.

Another important step in party preparation that can save time and anguish after the event is protecting the surfaces of your furniture. Halloween costumes often involve makeup, colored hair sprays, and fake tattoos. Decorations may involve silly string, crepe paper, fake blood, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. All of these can leave accidental stains that can be difficult to remove from couches and chairs.

To protect their couch upholstery, many hosts and hostesses find that slipcovers are a cost effective solution. After the party, they can be taken off, cleaned in the washing machine, and reused again next year at Halloween. If purchased in the traditional Halloween colors of orange or black, slipcovers can also make the decorations more effective.

To protect your tables from accidental spills, use tablecloths, which look even better if they’re Halloween-themed. Tablecloths made from PVC are useful as they can easily be wiped clean. Alternatively, you could make your own using an old sheet and decorate it with hand prints or painted spiders.

If you’re having a sit-down meal, it’s worth using inexpensive dining chair slipcovers on your seats, both to protect them from food spills and to color coordinate them with the rest of your decorations.

Once the furniture is all protected by slipcovers and tablecloths, the following ideas might add to the ambience of an adult Halloween party of monstrous fun:

• Dry ice hidden in black pots, behind curtains, or under table cloths
• Black netting draped into corners with plastic spiders and bugs randomly attached
• Snakes strategically placed coming from under cushions, cabinets, or along window sills
• Tombstones fashioned from poster board with a special epitaph for each guest
• Piles of shrunken heads fashioned from carving faces on apples and allowing them to dry
• Bowls of eyeballs fashioned from white powdered doughnut holes and black and red icing

For adult Halloween parties, black out curtains are quite effective, and exchanging the regular light bulbs in lamps and light fixtures to red ones can be dramatic as well. Some hosts and hostesses even use black lights for a more frightening experience.
For a children’s Halloween party, decorations should concentrate on fun rather than the scare factor. Children find the following ideas appealing:

• Jack-O-Lanterns with comical faces
• Silly String spider webs with a variety of ants, lizards, and bugs
• Funny bony skeletons
• Tootsie Roll Pop ghost trees made from a tissue tied over this treat with a ribbon and dotted with eyes
• A curtain of wet spaghetti noodles hanging just low enough to touch the top of little heads
• Black and Orange balloons with silly faces glued onto them

Although the goal of decorating for a Halloween party is to provide entertainment for the guests, this task can also be an enjoyable experience for the family giving the party. Imaginative ideas are all over the web, and most are quite inexpensive. And if you take care to protect your furniture when putting up the decorations, you can really relax and enjoy your party!

5 Biggest Movie Stories from Comic Con

Popular movies = popular Halloween costumes, especially the type of movies that are featured at Comic Con.

Each year, I pay close attention to ComiCon San Diego, wishing that I were there and watching all the great stories and surprises that come out of it. Here is a great recap from Moviefone:

1. The 'Marvel' panel lives up to the hype.
The panel featured upcoming Captain America and Thor movies. I was excited to see that Hugo Weaving was cast as Red Skull in the Captain America movie. There was also a special surprise teaser for the upcoming 2012 Avengers movie:
"The screen went black, Samuel Jackson's voice narrated a trailer tease for 'The Avengers' as the title treatment appeared, and the cast came out on stage: Jackson (Nick Fury), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), and the three previously missing pieces of the puzzle in Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo "reprising" (or more accurately, replacing Edward Norton in) the role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and Joss Whedon as the movie's director. Those people lucky enough to be in the room had never felt prouder to call themselves geeks."

2. 'Scott Pilgrim' screening wows the fans.

ComicCon fans went crazy over the trailer for this new movie, which heralds the geek as a hero who fights off ex boyfriends in attempt to get the girl.

3. Han Solo and James Bond, together at last.

Both Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford appear in Jon Favreau's new sci fi western movie 'Cowboys and Aliens'. This marked Harrison Ford's ComicCon debut, and the fans welcomed him with open arms and cheers.

4. 'Tron' footage and party takes fans back to the future.

The Tron movie is finally opening this December, something that ComicCon fans have been waiting for 3 years since the Tron trailer premiered 3 years ago at ComicCon.

5. Warner Bros. panel shows new 'Harry Potter' footage, but 'Sucker Punch' gets the buzz.

The trailer for the newest Harry Potter movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part 1) was screened and even though this is one of the biggest movies being released this fall, the cast did not have a big presence at ComicCon.

A movie that did get a big reaction from the crowd is Green Lantern, and the big reaction was evidently more for Ryan Reynolds, than for the movie trailer. The article reported that he recited the Green Lantern Oath, word for word, which has got to be greatly appreciated by any GL fan! He also signed a comic book for a lucky fan.

But the biggest buzz coming out of the Warner Bros. panel was for Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch,' a fantasy-action film with an all-female cast that includes Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung and Jena Malone. We will have to stay tuned for that, because I am sure if will be packed with sexy costumes!

It's no surprise that the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been a huge success at the box office; but what you may not know is that the Captain Jack Sparrow costume and the costumes from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were a huge success too. Of all the traditions connected with Halloween, dressing up in an imaginative costume is the most exciting for many people. In fact, some stretch the pleasure over several weeks before October 31st as they brainstorm ideas for a costume and purchase or make the items needed to get it just right. To reward these people for their ingenuity and effort, it is always exciting to have a costume contest during a Halloween party.

To make the Halloween costume contest entertaining for all takes a bit of preparation before the party, but this will ensure that even the host or hostess can enjoy the fun. It is important to let the guests know before they arrive that a contest will be a big part of the evening and that prizes will be awarded for the best Halloween costumes. Depending on the age of the attendees, it might be nice to have a theme for the costumes, particularly if younger children are involved because some frighten quite easily. Some of the following themes might prevent the scare factor from getting out of control:

When Colleen Atwood set out to design the costumes for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” hitting theaters Friday [March 5, 2010], the last thing the Academy Award winner wanted to replicate was the cliché Alice-in-a-bag costumes that arrive on the shelves of drug stores every Halloween.

“I was running in the other direction from that,” declares Atwood, who ultimately rendered much of the film’s marquee cast virtually unrecognizable — turning Anne Hathaway into a frosty White Queen; Johnny Depp into a clown-faced Mad Hatter, and Helena Bonham Carter into a cartoonish Red Queen. To help with ideas, Atwood consulted a more authentic reference — the illustrations by John Tenniel and Lewis Carroll that accompanied early editions of Carroll’s 1865 classic.

Atwood can only take partial credit for the cast’s on-screen appearance, though. The costume designer relied on an extensive hair and makeup team that included head makeup artist Valli O’Reilly and hair department head Terry Baliel. What’s more, since Burton used a technique that combined live action with animation, Atwood was able to enhance her designs with the magic of movies. “I got to do all these new things I hadn’t done before,” says Atwood, who has worked with Burton on seven previous films including “Big Fish” and “Sweeney Todd.”

Today on the Rachael Ray Show was "Tips Day" a day of all kinds of tips from viewers and experts on everything from food & cooking, to health, to beauty even how to keep ants out of your house!

Beauty experts Gretta Monahan and Mally Roncal had a "Tip Off" to see who had the best beauty secret. In my opinion, they both won! Here are the beauty tips:

From Mally: Combat tired eyes by using a shimmering silver or pink shadow on the inside points of your eyes and where the socket meets your nose. Using concealer to cover under eye darkness is well known, but women often overlook this inner area.

From Gretta: For longer lasting lipstick, after brushing on your favorite lip color, set it with the same color blush! Use the same or similar color and a large brush to brush on just a bit of blush to set the color, then apply your lip gloss over that. It will make your lipstick have lasting color and lasting power!

From Mally: Make your natural hair makeup brushes last a lifetime! You should be cleaning your makeup brushes at least once per month if not every other week using baby shampoo. But you can also condition your natural hair makeup brushes with your favorite hair conditioner. Just put a dab of condition on the brush, rub it in and rinse in a dish of water. Also, do not put your brushes tip side up in a cup to dry, lay them on a towel with the handle side up higher so that the water will drain off rather than go into the base of the brush and loosen the glue.

From Gretta: How to keep your eye shadow on long with out fading! Use lip balm on your eyes before brushing on your eye shadow. The eye shadow will stay in place and will not lose color!

From Mally: Tip for eyebrow pencils: your eyebrow pencil color should be a shade lighter than your actual eye brow hair color. This applies to all hair colors except silver or very fair blonde.

From Gretta: Beauty tip for dry hair and dry scalp: add a few drops of tea tree oil to your favorite shampoo!

The suddenly super-buzzed-about horror flick 'Paranormal Activity' was made for a mere $11,000 over the course of seven days -- and is now being called "the scariest movie of the decade." The film follows a young couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who, convinced they're being haunted by spirits, set up a video camera to monitor their bedroom over the course of 20 nights.

Will it repeat the success of 'Blair Witch'? It's too early to tell, but the cards are falling into place -- last night in L.A., for example, 4,500 people lined up to try to get into a special screening. And 'Paranormal Activity' beats out 'Blair Witch' in one vital field: It's scarier. While 'Blair Witch' may have scared people away from the woods for a few years (like 'Jaws' did the water two decades earlier), who's going to stay away from their own bedroom? Here's how a killing machine evolved into a killer franchise.

1984

The Terminator debuts in 1984, directed by James Cameron. Starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was only known as Conan at the time. The film pulls in $78 million worldwide. Meanwhile, the first wave of novelizations hits bookstores, and a franchise is born.

1990

The first Terminator videogame for PCs hits the streets, sparking more than two dozen iterations across a wide array of consoles. Flush with Rambo dough, indie film studio Carolco Pictures acquires Hemdale's rights for a film follow-up. Cameron signs on to direct.

1991

Terminator 2: Judgment Day—at $100 million, then the most expensive production in Hollywood history—is the top-grossing movie of the year, eclipsing $200 million in the US and $520 million worldwide.

1992

T2-mania is in full swing. Metallic T-800 skulls show up on backpacks, boxer shorts, lunch boxes, and cubicle walls as licensees like Kenner and MacFarlane Toys see total sales for Terminator-related merchandise climb into the nine-digit range.

1996

T2 3-D: Battle Across Time, a 12-minute theme-park attraction, opens at Universal Studios in Orlando. One of the priciest ($60 million) and most complex attractions ever, it's codirected and written by Cameron and features original performances by all of T2's principal actors.

2003

Director Jonathan Mostow spends a whopping $187 million to make Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. It makes a modest $44 million on opening weekend, but its ultimate box-office gross lifts the film franchise's total to $1 billion worldwide.

2008

Fox's The Sarah Connor Chronicles, starring Lena Headey, Thomas Dekker, and Summer Glau, debuts to 18.3 million viewers. It's a critical darling but struggles for ratings and is hobbled by the Writers Guild strike. Nonetheless, Fox renews the series for another season.

2009

Warner Bros. is set to release the $200 million, postapocalyptic Terminator Salvation, starring Christian Bale, in nearly 4,000 theaters on Memorial Day weekend. A battalion of next-gen videogames is in the works, and a $10 million, 2,850-foot-long Terminator roller coaster opens at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

You'll need a fluffy robe and a respectable manicure.

Here is a makeup tip to help out with applying makeup quicker and how to get the most out of your makeup look.

Everyone always wants thicker, longer eyelashes, well I heard a trick from the makeup artist and celebrity stylist Mally Roncal on Rachael Ray the other day: apply black eye liner to the inside, upper lid of your eyes, this is an easy way to make your lashes look darker, longer and fatter and make your eyes pop!

Two other Marvel heroes will also hit the screen that summer -- 'Thor' on June 17 and 'The First Avenger: Captain America' on July 22 -- while the multi-hero tentpole 'The Avengers' has been pushed from summer 2011 to May 4, 2012.
